News Release
Local Knights of Columbus council receives top international award
PORT MOODY — Knights of Columbus Council 9846 of Port Moody (St. Joseph’s Parish) has earned the distinction of “Star Council Award,” one of the international organization’s top awards, for the 2015-2016 fraternal year. The organization’s headquarters, located in new Haven, Connecticut, made the announcement.
The award recognizes overall excellence in the areas of membership recruitment and retention, promotion of the fraternal insurance program, and sponsorship of service-oriented activities.
Mark Pan, District Deputy #28, presented the award to Dennis Kwan, Grand Knight, Council 9846, at the council’s regular monthly meeting on Oct. 25. “Receiving the Star Council Award is quite an honour for us,” Kwan said. “We’re extremely proud of this accomplishment.”
He pointed out that one of the council’s areas of service is its monthly distribution of baked goods donated by Cobs Bakery at Sunwood Square in Coquitlam. A dozen Knights were on hand Oct. 25 to pack the products, which were then distributed to the Legion Manor and the SHARE food bank in Port Moody, and the Door is Open drop-in centre in the downtown eastside of Vancouver.
In announcing the award, Pan offered his congratulations to the council. “Your dedication to the Knights is seen in the high standard of excellence you have achieved,” he said. “May this award be a reminder and an inspiration to the members of your council to continue to promote the ideals of Columbianism for the good of the Church, your community, and the order.”
The Knights of Columbus is the world’s largest Catholic lay organization. It provides members and their families with volunteer opportunities in service to the Church, their communities, families and young people. With more than 1.9 million members in over 15,000 councils around the world, the Knights annually donate more than US$175 million and 73 million hours of service to charitable causes.
