The idea was to create a Christmas Star…a Bethlehem Star if you wish, that will light up the way for pilgrims and the three wise men and herald the coming of the Christ child. Through the combined efforts of a number of notable Knights, Br Sherwin Ruiz, who lent us his CAD skills to create an accurate cutting template for the star, to brothers David Ho, David Kiwanuka, John Rochard, Zeus Custodio, Mark Custodio, Samuel Hu and of course, the indomitable Brian Derrick …we managed to get the star cut to size, and all holes drilled.
The base was a challenge, but through the dedicated efforts of the brother Knights who stayed to finish it in the bitter cold of Fr. Au’s garage, we managed to finish it! We started at 9.00 am, and when the final screw was driven in, it was closer to 4.30 pm. Much of the delay happened due to the fact that we needed to drill holes on both sides for the smaller lights – 9/16ths on one side and 1/2 inch on the other, to make sure the bulbs sat nicely.
After a test run, we decided that it would be too much work to prime the wood and paint the star and have it ready for Saturday evening mass, and instead settled for a launch date of the coming weekend, the 2nd Sunday of Advent. We will be doing this over the course of the week. If you’re able to help, simply contact bro John Rochard, Brian Derrick or myself to arrange a suitable time.
The original plan was to raffle each LARGE bulb for $5.00 and each SMALL bulb for $2.00 to give everyone in the parish an opportunity to be a part of this star. We will discuss this, as well as the Council Christmas party, at the upcoming Executive Meeting on Thursday.
Meanwhile, enjoy the pictures of Knights at work….Lighting up for Christ!!!

And there will be more calls to come! We’ll be finishing up the Star over the next few days. It goes into the vestibule for Saturday Evening mass, and donations will be collected. We hope to have the star fully lit up by the 3rd Sunday of Advent. And then we’ll mount to the belfry of the church for all of Port Moody to see.
We will also be building the Christmas Crib for this Sunday..so lots of work to do!
Well done Brothers. Please make sure you take a picture and send it to Br. Edgar Ursua with a story so we can publish it in the State Newsletter.
