Council Christmas Potluck – Dec 14

Our on-again, then off-again and finally on-again Christmas potluck party was held after the Saturday evening mass on Dec 14th. We had a healthy group of men, who together with their spouses, and one child enjoyed great food and cheer with our Pastor Fr. Au. There were many highlights in the food, including Filipino Pancit and a Malaysian/Canadian dish called “Moose Rendang”, some great curry chicken and of course some great wine to add to the cheer.

Kudos to brothers Sam and Rommel who set up the popcorn machine, music as well as Christmas tree and tables for the small party. I’m pretty sure everyone enjoyed themselves thoroughly!

Christmas Crib – more photos

Brothers, I’m sure most of you would have seen the Christmas Crib by now. These pictures are for our viewers from other parts of the country and the interweb, who might be interested in our crib…and how we in St. Joseph’s keep Christ in Christmas!

Christmas Star Project – Part 2 and Christmas Crib too!

So the Star was built, but we had run out of time to get it ready for mass the previous week. Over the week, brother Brian and John painstakingly painted the base and star in the portable, which had heat to help the paint dry.

Today (Dec 7th), brothers Rome, Edmund, Patrick, John, Justin, Zeus, Sam and Mark showed up at 9.30 am to help with putting the finishing touches to the Star AS WELL as begin building the Christmas Crib, in time for 5.30 pm Saturday mass!! It was bitterly cold in Father Au’s garage…felt like minus 10 or lower. With the help of Autocad drawings by brother Sherwin, we made short work of the manger itself, using hinges and building slots to allow for  easy disassembly of the manger so that it can be stored flat.

Meanwhile brothers Rome and Edmund retreated to the portable, which was heated (smart guys!) to affix the bulbs to the star. This was easier said that done, as it was discovered that many holes were just too small, so they had to widen them…the small holes…all 155 of them! The Christmas Star is up, and in the midst of the Christmas concert practice, we managed to get the Crib up and fully dressed in time for mass too!

Brothers, you should be proud of yourselves. Through your actions, you practiced the three main principles or our order. Charity – you gave of your time, and effort all for the selfless task of raising funds for the disaster victims as well as SVDP. Unity – we worked together under difficult conditions with perfect harmony. And of course, there was a LOT of fraternity in action that cold morning and afternoon and as GK, I will have to say that I am proud to stand alongside my brothers Knights of Council 9846 as we worked extremely well together as a TEAM!

Vivat Jesus brothers!! Now enjoy the pictures!

“Coffee Break Raffle”

The Coffee Break Raffle was conceived by Bro. David Kiwanuka, who was touched by Fr. Alfred Okelo’s mission of rescuing and caring for Ugandan orphans who had been forced to become child soldiers. Br. David came to the council asking for help and we advised him to that the council will assist in a raffle of a gift basket called the “coffee break” raffle.

Tickets for the raffle were to be sold over two weekends and the entire profits were to be sent to Fr. Okelo in Uganda to the benefit of the Rechele Comprehensive Secondary School, of the Northern Uganda-Lira Diocese.

As Fr. Au was away on Sunday, we had Fr. Claude pick the winner after the Noon mass, witnessed by a number of parishioners as well as Knights. The winner of the Raffle was ticket: 259409.

The net proceeds for this raffle was $250.00 and this will be sent to Fr. Okelo.

Here is a letter of thanks from Father Okello:

Dear Father Richard Au and the Brother Knights of the KoC St. Joseph’s Council 9846,

I am happy to inform you that I have received your kind donation of Canadian $250 (Uganda shillings 550,000). I thank all those who sacrificed to raise the funds and endeavored to make me receive it.

Brother Knights, I am so grateful to you for thinking of my mission work, and especially for the school that I am heading. This is a very welcome and blessed donation at this time of the academic year. I will let the students, teachers and the school board members know about it and I am sure they will appreciate very much your generosity. We do not have anything to do for you but we will pray that God may continue blessing you in so many ways, especially as you serve His people that are in your care. Thanks for making contributions to our school.

To the parishioners of St. Joseph, Port Moody, I thank you for the short but memorable and wonderful time that I spent with you last August. All of you were so kind and good to me. I learnt a lot from you within the short time. Thanks for what each one of you did for me. May you keep up the spirit. I request you to continue praying for me and my mission.

I would like to take this opportunity to wish all of you a very Merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year, 2014.

Thank you,

Fr. Alfred Okello

Christmas Star Project

The idea was to create a Christmas Star…a Bethlehem Star if you wish, that will light up the way for pilgrims and the three wise men and herald the coming of the Christ child. Through the combined efforts of a number of notable Knights, Br Sherwin Ruiz, who lent us his CAD skills to create an accurate cutting template for the star, to brothers David Ho, David Kiwanuka, John Rochard, Zeus Custodio, Mark Custodio, Samuel Hu  and of course, the indomitable Brian Derrick …we managed to get the star cut to size, and all holes drilled.

The base was a challenge, but through the dedicated efforts of the brother Knights who stayed to finish it in the bitter cold of Fr. Au’s garage, we managed to finish it! We started at 9.00 am, and when the final screw was driven in, it was closer to 4.30 pm. Much of the delay happened due to the fact that we needed to drill holes on both sides for the smaller lights – 9/16ths on one side and 1/2 inch on the other, to make sure the bulbs sat nicely.

After a test run, we decided that it would be too much work to prime the wood and paint the star and have it ready for Saturday evening mass, and instead settled for a launch date of the coming weekend, the 2nd Sunday of Advent. We will be doing this over the course of the week. If you’re able to help, simply contact bro John Rochard, Brian Derrick or myself to arrange a suitable time.

The original plan was to raffle each LARGE bulb for $5.00 and each SMALL bulb for $2.00 to give everyone in the parish an opportunity to be a part of this star. We will discuss this, as well as the Council Christmas party,  at the upcoming Executive Meeting on Thursday.

Meanwhile, enjoy the pictures of Knights at work….Lighting up for Christ!!!

Donations to St. Vincent De Paul

Through the fund-raising efforts of you brother Knights, our council has donated $100 to St. Vincent De Paul Society. Here’s Margaret Rowe Chairman of SVDP St. Joseph’s receiving the cheque.

Your council has also donated $100 to Covenant House charity for homeless youth who made a desperate appeal for donations to help troubled youth. SAM_3000

Council then donated an additional $100 from Charity Appeal Rebate to SVDP again. Here is GK Mark handing over the cheque to the VP of SVDP Barry, at the recent Christmas Parish Breakfast.

Below, is an excerpt from an email from the President of SVDP, Margaret Rowe:

Thank you so much for your generosity.  We delivered 60 boxes of food this morning plus gifts for 23 children.  Our cupboards are now low so we will buy food to replenish in case we get any requests for emergency hampers over Christmas.

Council Award!

Philippines Disaster Relief – Update

Brothers, please click here to read the important letter from the worthy State Deputy. The State Council has put together a mechanism for us to channel our fundraising efforts to the Philippines, through Columbus Charities. We will discuss at our upcoming meeting, but your Executive has already made plans to donate the proceeds of the next Parish Breakfast, coming up on the 24th, to this effort. We were just waiting for the right fundraising mechanism to announce it.

The net proceeds from our latest Parish Breakfast event was $142.00. This entire net profit was donated to the Philippine’s Disaster Relief Fund. Thanks to the brother Knights who showed up all day to help run and manage the Breakfast event!

Remembrance Day Nov.11.2013

In keeping with tradition, Council 9846 served its patriotic duty by presenting themselves for the parade and march past at the Cenotaph at Port Moody. As in years past, the Grand Knight of the council, brother Mark Pan laid a wreath to honour the memory of ‘The Fallen Soldier’. Flanked by Sir Knights Zeus Custodio and Mark Edward Custodio, these Knights of Columbus participated in this community event with full gravitas and somberness befitting the event.

Here are some pictures that were taken by brother Sam of the event.
